Quality criteria for the web pages of the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM)

Who are we?

The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) is an independent federal higher authority within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Health (Bundesministerium für Gesundheit, BMG). The seat of the authority was relocated to Bonn when the German government moved from Bonn to Berlin. The BfArM has evolved from the Institut für Arzneimittel (Institute for Drugs) which was established under the roof of the former Bundesgesundheitsamt (Federal Health Office) on 1 July 1975.

Today, a staff of about 1000 members – among them physicians, pharmacists, chemists, biologists, technical assistants, and administrative staff – are concerned with the authorisation and registration of medicinal products. The aim of their work is the prevention of health risks by continuously improving the safety of medicinal products, by monitoring risks from medical devices, and by controlling the legal marketing of narcotics and precursors.
BfArM’s revenue and expenditure is specified in the federal budget (chapter 1510); proper budget management is controlled by the BMG and the Federal Audit Office. These proceeds are mainly acquired via fees for official acts (cf. Fees Ordinance). Additional revenues are due to assignments from the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) and other health organisations.

The BfArM does not advertise in any way and hence has no advertising revenues.

What are our demands on the information we provide?

We will only publish state-of-the-art information subject to four-eye examination before publication, i.e. each text is reviewed by the author and at least by one member of the BfArM-website management . Only then the texts are posted on the website by our internetdesk.

Since the quality of health and research related information depends on how recent it is, we add the dates of its compilation and of its last update.

Confidentiality of data is important for a trustful relationship; therefore, the principles stated in the privacy policy apply to our entire website.

The information given on our web pages is intended to support, but not to displace, the relationship between doctors and patients.

Against the background that the integration of individuals with disabilities plays a major role at the BfArM, the provisions of the Ordinance on Barrier-Free Information Technology (BITV) have been implemented wherever possible.
