Symposium of the GHPP PharmTrain2 project with the Food and Drugs Authority Ghana in Accra

September 2024, Accra

In September 2024, the PharmTrain2 project team, travelled to Ghana to meet with their long-standing partner institution, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) Ghana. The aim of the visit was to review joint achievements, discuss current challenges, and explore opportunities for future collaboration in the context of a potential next funding phase of the project.

The highlight of the mission was a symposium organised by PharmTrain2, which saw participation from FDA Ghana's management and technical partners of the project. All areas of the project — structure development, capacity development, and the scaling up of results to the regional and continental level — were comprehensively discussed. In addition, a visit to FDAheadquarters took place, where the project team engaged with various departments of the authority.

The collaboration with the PharmTrain2 project has significantly contributed to the development of FDA Ghana. Jointly developed guidelines were successfully integrated into the institution's structures, playing a key role in the successful WHO re-benchmarking of FDA Ghana. The project has also had a notable impact on the individual professional development of participating FDA staff. Several PharmTrain2 fellows have successfully applied the knowledge and skills acquired through the program in their daily work and now hold leadership roles within the authority from where they share their expertise with colleagues. The eLearning modules developed within the project have become an integral part of FDA Ghana's onboarding process for new staff.

During the discussions, the importance of the long-standing institutional, but also personal, partnership between PharmTrain2 and FDA Ghana was acknowledged. The trust that has been built through this collaboration is crucial for the project's success and the achievement of sustainable outcomes. Not only was the existing partnership strengthened, but the foundation for continued successful collaboration and shared goals in the coming years was laid. The results achieved through the PharmTrain2 project are currently being scaled up to the regional and continental levels, further enhancing the significance of the partnership.

The PharmTrain2 project looks forward to many more years of successful collaboration and friendship with FDA Ghana.
