The RKI is the Federal Government's central institution in the field of public health responsible for identifying, preventing and combating diseases and serves as the National Institute of Public Health. It assesses, analyses and conducts research on diseases that are extremely hazardous, widespread or of great importance to the public or to health policy.

The Paul-Ehrlich-Institut, Federal Institute for Vaccines and Biomedicines, makes an essential contribution to the availability and safety of effective biomedical products. The regulatory responsibilities of the institute comprise, in addition to authorising marketing, providing scientific advice on the development of medicinal products, approving clinical trials, experimental product testing and the official testing and release of batches as well as the assessment of adverse reactions to medicinal products.

Improving the citizens' health is the aim of the Federal Centre for Health Education. As the higher authority specialised in promoting health it develops strategies for health education and preventive health measures and implements these through campaigns and projects together with its cooperation partners.

The German Institute for Medical Documentation and Information offers reliable medical knowledge via the internet, oversees medical classifications and terminology that are important for health telematics and is responsible for a Health Technology Assessment programme. The German Institute for Medical Documentation and Information’s responsibilities also include the development and operation of database-supported information systems for medicinal products, medical devices and health technology assessment.
