Urogynecological use of surgical meshes
The SCENIHR has published information regarding the urogynecological use of surgical meshes.
In December 2015, the European Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) published its scientific opinion on the safety of surgical meshes in urogynecological surgery. In particular, the publication deals with risks related to surgical treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Other foci are the route of implantation as well as the choice of different mesh designs and material properties.
The BfArM would like to draw attention to this publication. A full-text version has been made available on the SCENIHRs website: http://ec.europa.eu/health/scientific_committees/emerging/docs/scenihr_o_049.pdf.
